George Smith, NMSS Meeting Summary:

The International Atomic Energy Agency hosted the Twelfth Meeting of the Working Group on Radioactive Material Security on May 6 - 10, 2024, in Vienna, Austria.

Four plenary and four breakout sessions involving several speakers and panel discussions were held during the working group. Approximately 123 participants attended the conference. The U.S. delegation consisted of representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC),

Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration, and private sector medical physics community.

George Smith participated in the four plenary sessions and presented on Experiences in Sharing of Information on Security Incidents Involving Radioactive Materials. In addition, he attended high-level and technical sessions, engaged attendees during breakout sessions, and informed regulators on radioactive materials security enhancement initiatives.

Results Achieved:

George participated in discussion panels, engaged in plenary and breakout sessions, and connected with international nuclear radioactive materials safety and security professionals. The conference provided the opportunity to share U.S. experiences and to mentor conference participants with less developed regulatory oversight programs. George promoted international cooperation in nuclear and radioactive materials safety and security and gained awareness of challenges, lessons learned, and best practices from conference attendees.
