[External_Sender] NO to Xcel Nuclear Reactor License Extension
- Hello, I am a resident of Minnesota emailing you to comment on the 20-year license extension for Xcels nuclear reactor in Monticello. In November 2022, Xcel first reported it found leaked radioactivity in onsite Monticello groundwater. They later reported that about 400,000 gallons contaminated with high levels of radioactive tritium had leaked into the ground. One year later, this estimate was more than doubled to 829,000 gallons. In April of 2024, NRC admitted that [t]ritium detections in wells near the Mississippi River Bank in 2023 indicate tritium-impacted groundwater likely discharged to the river.. This radioactivity is a threat to the Mississippi River and the people and animals that rely on it. Tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, and like ordinary hydrogen combines with oxygen to make water. As radioactive water, tritium can cross the placenta, posing a risk of birth defects and early pregnancy failures. Ingestion of tritiated water also increases cancer risk. Tritium contaminates groundwater under the reactor and then it can enter the food chain - and us. Tritium contaminates water and soil around the reactor and then it can enter the food chain - and us. Tritium stays dangerous in the environment for over 100 years. There were at least five other radioactive chemicals in the leaked wastewater. These poisons are the same as those related to illnesses and deaths caused by nuclear disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima.
I say NO to an extension for Xcel's nuclear reactor in Monticello, and demand that they be held accountable for the damage they've done to the people and the environment.
