[External_Sender] Public Comment Docket ID NRC-2023-0031 To Whom It May Concern, As a Minnesota Resident, I am writing to express my opposition to the extension of Xcel Energy's license for operation of the Monticello nuclear plant.
In 2023 an estimated more than 800,000 gallons of radioactive wastewater from the Monticello reactor leaked into the ground. The ramifications from this contamination remain unknown, but it is entirely possible that the drinking water of residents has been or is contaminated.
My daughter and son-in-law live in Minneapolis, in the Ingestion Pathway Zone of the Monticello reactor. I am deeply concerned about the potential for their water supply to become poisoned by radioactive materials leaked from the Monticello site into the Mississippi River watershed and river.
The Monticello reactor is 54 years old, one of the 3 oldest reactors in the United States. It was meant to operate for only 40 years. To extend the operating license of this reactor is an affront to public safety.
Please do NOT extend Xcel's energy to operate this reactor. In fact, I urge you to require that the reactor be permanently shut down, immediately.
