SUBJECT:
INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 36TH REGULATORY INFORMATION CONFERENCE (RIC)
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), it is my sincere pleasure to invite you to participate in the 36 th Regulatory Information Conference (RIC) as a presenter in the session titled, Assembling the Pieces: Mobilizing Nuclear Energy with Factory -Fabricated and Transportable Micro-Reactors, to take place on March 14, 2024, from 10:30 am to 12:00 p.m.EST. This year, the RIC will be a hybrid event held from March 12-14, 2024, with in-person attendees at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center and virtual attendees participating remotely by accessing the RIC conference platform.
As the NRC continues its transformation journey to be a more modern, risk -informed regulator, we are excited to bring new innovations to the RIC! This years theme is Adapting to a Changing Landscape. This panel session, chaired by Mohamed Shams, Director, Division of Advanced Reactors and Non-Power Production and Utilization Facilities, Nuclear Reactor Regulation, NRC, will focus on novel approaches to licensing, design, and limited operation of factory-fabricated micro-reactors. Currently, micro-reactor developers, in coordination with the Department of Energy and other organizations, are developing deployment models that call for the fueling and, in some cases, operational testing of reactors in a factory prior to transportation to the ultimate deployment site. The NRC staff will discuss licensing strategies associated with these deployment models, including approaches to increase review efficiency and regulatory predictability. External panelists are asked to discuss the following, as relevant to their expertise and authority:
- Proposed micro-reactor technologies and designs
- Proposed factory-based deployment strategies, including factory fueling and testing
- Anticipated research, development, and regulatory needs to facilitate micro-reactor deployment
We hope you are available to accept this invitation and encourage panelists to attend in person.
To confirm your participation, we request that you complete and sign the enclosed NRC Forms 1105 and 1106. We also request you provide a speaker photo. Photos should be high resolution and with 200 x 200 pixel dimensions. Save the documents and photo, and attach them to a confirmation email to Angelica Gheen at Angelica.Gheen@nrc.gov and Ossy Font, Session Coordinator, at Ossy.Font@nrc.gov by as soon as practicable. If you have presentation slides youd like to share during this session, please let us know with your invitation acceptance and must be attached to a separate email in.ppt format.
If you would like to nominate someone else to participate in this session on your behalf, please contact Angelica Gheen at Angelica.Gheen@nrc.gov and Ossy Font, Session Coordinator, at Ossy.Font@nrc.gov.
Additional background on the NRC and RIC is provided below.
