Confirmation that Susquehanna CBS exemption request is for future loading only in August 2024 Date:
Thursday, March 21, 2024 10:14:00 AM
- Katie, Per our conversation this morning, NRC is reviewing the SSES exemption request to load six (6) new MPC-89-CBS to support the next loading of these canisters beginning in August 2024.
To be clear, if approved, this exemption would only be applicable to these six (6) new canisters for the August 2024 loading campaign, and SSES in not requesting an exemption for the list of affected canisters currently loaded at SSES.
The reason for the clarification was the use of the words continued storage in the Environmental Conclusion from the SSES application (see highlighted section below). We wanted to make sure that SSES was not considering already loaded canisters within the scope of review for this exemption request.
5.7 Environmental Conclusion Based on the environmental assessment, the continued storage and future use of MPC-89CBS at Susquehanna is in the public interest in that it avoids unnecessary operational risks for the SSES Units 1 and 2 that would result from the alternative to the proposed action.
We now understand that SSES only included the list of affected canisters currently loaded in Table 2 in the submittal enclosure to demonstrate the adequacy of established administrative controls for safe handling previously implemented at the site. Thank you for the clarification.
Separate from the clarification above, I understand that you intend to voluntarily provide a supplement to the SSES exemption request by COB today in regard to Section 4.4.
Otherwise in the Public Interest.
Thanks again.
