UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 MEMORANDUM TO:
Kimberly A. Webber, Director Division of Safety Systems Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM:
Stephen M. Bajorek, Sr. Level Advisor for Thermal Hydraulics Division of Safety Systems Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
SUBJECT:
PUBLIC RELEASE OF THE NRCS DRAFT NON-LIGHT WATER REACTOR VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION PLAN FOR THE COMPREHENSIVE REACTOR ANALYSIS BUNDLE The computer codes developed under the U.S. Department of Energys (DOEs) Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program possess unique modeling capabilities that have been developed specifically for non-light water reactor (non-LWR) designs. The NRC staff plans to use these NEAMS codes coupled with NRC codes being developed, known collectively as the Blue Comprehensive Reactor Analysis Bundle (BlueCRAB), to model pertinent phenomena described in non-LWR license applications.
The enclosed report discusses the code suite proposed by the NRC for non-LWR design basis confirmatory analysis, documents the applicable V&V activities collected to date, and recommends potential future validation steps by reactor design type. It is a working draft representing the current status of code validation and summarizes the available experimental database. Significant inputs were obtained through collaborations with DOE and the National Laboratorys staff. The NRC plans to update this report periodically with new validation cases in continued collaboration with DOE and the National Laboratory colleagues.
In summary, this report documents the significant progress made to verify and validate the BlueCRAB analytical codes. Verification plans are in place for most codes, and validation has been performed for the design types most likely to become near-term licensing candidates.
Additional validation is in progress or planned. While additional validation will continue to be performed as data becomes available, it should be highlighted that no unresolvable gaps exist in the validation database as phenomena that are poorly understood can be bounded by conservative assumptions if necessary.
