RESEARCH INFORMATION LETTER (RIL) 2024-01 PROCEEDINGS OF THE WORKSHOP ON THE INTEGRATION OF SAFETY, SECURITY, AND SAFEGUARDS FOR ADVANCED REACTOR AND FUEL FABRICATION FACILITY DESIGN AND OPERATIONS Enclosed for your information and use is Research Information Letter (RIL) 2024-01, Proceedings of the Workshop on the Integration of Safety, Security, and Safeguards for Advanced Reactor and Fuel Fabrication Facility Design and Operations, related the virtual workshop held on December 5-6, 2023.
This workshop was part of the Future-Focused Research project assessing the integration of safety, security, and safeguards during design and operations. The workshop included presentations by 19 expert speakers followed by facilitated panel discussions and was well attended with over 340 registrants.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
- 1. Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices for design and operations of advanced reactors and fuel cycle facilities using an integrated 3S approach.
- 2. Gain a better understanding of industry activities and perspectives with respect to 3S approaches to further inform NRC supporting activities to risk-inform and better equip the agencys readiness and posture to address applicants and licensees regulatory needs.
- 3. Understand developing research capabilities that address the interdependencies and integration between security, safety, and safeguards in both early design and future stages, including construction and operations.
- 4. Become aware of combined or integrated 3S modeling and simulation tools and applications.
