No: 24-010 February 2, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Makes Available Browns Ferrys Subsequent License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received a subsequent license renewal application from the Tennessee Valley Authority, which requests an additional 20 years of operation for all three reactors at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Athens, Alabama. The application to renew the reactor licenses from 60 to 80 years is now available for public inspection on the NRC website.
TVA filed the application on Jan. 19 seeking to renew the license for a second time.
Browns Ferrys three boiling-water reactors are approximately 32 miles west of Huntsville, Alabama. The NRC approved in May 2006 the first renewal of the reactors licensing term from 40 to 60 years. Unit 1 is currently licensed to operate through Dec. 20, 2033; Unit 2 through June 28, 2034; and Unit 3 through July 2, 2036.
The NRC staff is reviewing the application to determine if it has sufficient information to begin the agencys detailed safety and environmental reviews. If the application is determined to be acceptable for review and docketing, the staff will then publish a notice of opportunity for the public to request a hearing before the NRCs Atomic Safety and Licensing Board.
Information about the license renewal process is available on the NRC website. A copy of the Browns Ferry subsequent license renewal application also will be available at the Athens -
