No: 24-001 January 8, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Seeks Input, Offers Hearing Opportunity on North Anna Subsequent License Renewal Draft Environmental Impact Statement The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on its draft site-specific environmental impact statement - called an EIS - for the proposed second renewal of the licenses for the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia. The NRC is also providing an opportunity for the public to request a hearing based on new information in the draft EIS.

The agencys draft EIS examined the supplemental environmental report submitted by Virginia Electric and Power Company (Dominion). The staffs preliminary conclusion is there are no adverse environmental impacts that would preclude the renewal of North Annas operating licenses for another 20 years.

Dominion is seeking a second, or subsequent, licensing term to extend the plants operations from 60 to 80 years. The licenses for the North Anna reactors, located 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia, currently will expire in April 2038 for Unit 1, and in August 2040 for Unit 2.

The draft EIS is open for comments through Feb. 22. Interested parties have until March 8 to request a hearing; details on how to file a request are included in the Federal Register notice published today.

The NRC staff will hold two public meetings on the draft EIS, a webinar on Jan. 30 and an in-person meeting near the plant site. Details on the meetings will be published in the near future.

Written comments can be submitted by email at NorthAnnaEnvironmental@nrc.gov, or electronically at regulations.gov, using Docket ID NRC-2020-0234. Comments can also be submitted by mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop: TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, ATTN: Program Management, Announcements and Editing Staff.

A copy of Dominions subsequent license renewal environmental report supplement is available for public review at the Louisa County Library, 881 Davis Highway in Mineral, Virginia. Information about the North Anna subsequent license renewal review is available on the NRC website.
