SUMMARY
OF FEBRUARY 14, 2024, PREAPPLICATION MEETINGS WITH WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ON AP300 SMR WHITE PAPER NO. 6 ON NUCLEAR STEAM SUPPLY SYSTEM CONFIGURATION & LAYOUT On February 14, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a virtual public meeting with representatives of Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC). The purpose of the meeting was to hear WECs preapplication description of the AP300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Nuclear Steam Supply System Configuration and Layout that will be discussed in greater detail in a white paper WEC plans to submit on the same topic. The AP300 design is largely based on the AP1000 certified design with changes that reflect the smaller power output, lessons learned from the AP1000 construction, and a simplification of features. The public presentation slides for this meeting may be found under Agencywide Documents and Access Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML24040A210 and ML24040A211. The meeting was divided into two sessions: a public session followed by a proprietary session. WEC discussed its proprietary slides (ML24040A212, non-public) during the proprietary session.
WEC staff presented at both the public and proprietary sessions. The public session of the meeting began at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) and lasted 15 minutes. Members of the public were given the opportunity at the end of the public session to ask questions or make comments.
One member of the public asked if it could be stated when WEC plans to submit an application to the NRC for review. The response was that this information is proprietary at this time and once an application is submitted, the NRC will be ready to receive it. The closed session started at 1:20 p.m. ET and closed at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET. During the proprietary session NRC staff gave feedback on the proprietary details of WECs plans and general design.
