No: 23-066 October 16, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell , 301-415-8200 NRC Announces Hearing Opportunity for Summer Subsequent License Renewal

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced an opportunity to request a hearing on the application to renew for a second time the operating license of the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville, South Carolina.

The hearing opportunity was announced today in the Federal Register . The notice includes instructions for filing petitions to intervene by Dec. 15.

Dominion Energy South Carolina submitted an application in Aug ust seeking to renew the license for an additional 20 years of operation. The application, if approved, would extend Summers license to operate for up to 80 years. The NRC approved the first renewal in 2004, extending the licensing term from 40 to 60 years, through Aug. 6, 2042.

The NRC staff has officially docket ed the application and begun its detailed safety and environmental reviews. The staffs goal is to complete the application review in 22 months, providing Summer addresses information requests in a timely manner .

The Summer subsequent license renewal application is available on the NRC website and will be available at the Fairfield County Library, 300 West Washington St., in Winnsboro, South Carolina.
