Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC to Conduct Open House to Discuss 2022 Performance of Quad Cities Nuclear Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will be available to discuss the 2022 safety performance of the Quad Cities nuclear power plant during an in-person open house scheduled for August 23. The two-unit plant, operated by Constellation Energy Generation, is located in Cordova, Illinois.
The open house will be held from 5-6 p.m. Central time in the Port Byron Municipal Building Board Room, 120 S. Main St., in Port Byron. The NRC staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will participate in the discussion.
The NRC determined that Quad Cities operated safely during 2022. All inspection findings and performance indicators for Unit 1 were green, or very low safety significance. As a result, Unit 1 remains under the NRCs baseline level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year. For Unit 2, the NRC identified a white inspection finding of low-to-moderate safety significance, which involved the failure of a valve on a safety-related system to operate as designed during testing. As a result, Unit 2 was under increased NRC oversight as of the last quarter of 2022.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
Plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and other specialist inspectors from the agencys Region III office in Lisle, Illinois, and NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.
