NRC Schedules Public Meeting to Discuss Farley Nuclear Power Plant Performance

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting May 23 to discuss the 2022 safety performance of the Joseph M. Farley nuclear power plant. The two-unit plant is located near Dothan, Alabama, and operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co.

The meeting will be held from 6-7 p.m. Central time at the DoubleTree Hotel, 2740 Ross Clark Circle in Dothan. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions at the meeting.

The NRC concluded that Farley operated safely in 2022. However, in September 2022, the NRC launched a special inspection at the plant to review a security-related issue. During that inspection, the NRC identified a security-related finding that increased NRC oversight at the plant since October 2022.

The NRC will schedule an additional inspection to independently verify that the plant has taken sufficient corrective actions to address the problem.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color -coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. If an inspection finding or performance indicator has more than a very low safety significance, the NRC in creases its oversight.

The annual assessment letter for the Farley plant, including upcoming inspection plans, is available on the NRC website. Current performance information for the site is available on the NRC website and updated quarterly.
