The surveyed ground surface and top of casing elevations for the wells have also been provided on the figure.
The screened intervals for each of the three monitoring wells each extend to essentially the same depth elevation ranging from 926.04' to 924.85' elevation. The three wells are each screened across the majority of the injection trench interval with screen lengths similar to the GWI-BA1-01A injection well screen in the center of the trench.
All three of the monitoring wells were gauged prior to, during, and after the injection pilot test in December 2017. The static water level elevations in the wells and the groundwater level rise in response to the injected water are shown on the cross section.
In the December 8, 2023 RAI Response, the Licensee indicated that monitoring well 02W51 exhibited "anaomalous" groundwater elevations due to the fact that the well monitors a "perched" water-bearing zone.
Given the similar screened interval for the 02W51 well in comparison to the adjacent Sandstone B wells, the positive hydraulic response to the injection trench test in 2017 and the inclusion of the well in the Hydraulic Mound contour map in the 2018 Pilot Test Report, NRC staff favors the characterization of the 02W51 well as a water table rather than a "perched" zone monitoring well.

+10.09'
+2.82'
+1.85' Potential for groundwater seeps on the slope immediately east of TR-07/GWI-BA1-01 injection trench is illustrated in this 2018 Pilot Test Report figure by the slope of the Targeted Piezometric Surface during the Injection Test (~954' Maximum Elevation within the trench). The piezometric surface intersects the hill slope at an elevation of ~949' in the 2018 Pilot Test Report figure.
Topographic breaks in the slope observed at elevations
~953'-952' and ~945'-944' east of the trench on the contoured site maps appear to correlate with the resistant, well cemented, upper contacts of Sandstone A and Sandstone B, respectively (based on the 02W52 Geologic Log).
The presence of hard, resistant rock layers in the vadose zone may interrupt the vertical infiltration of the injected groundwater mound resulting in lateral flow and potential seeps on the hill slope. The potential for discharge of injected water into the ephemeral stream channel is also a possibility due to the proximity of the mound to the channel.
Regular, scheduled visual observation and monitoring of the hill slope for daylighting groundwater during remedial system operation would provide a measure of safety, as well as a means to evaluate system efficiency. Observation frequency could be reduced following sufficient confirmation of adequate subsurface system performance.
