Dave Gasperson 404-997-4417 NRC to Hold Virtual Public Meeting to Discuss Hatch Nuclear Power Plant Safety Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2022 safety performance of the Edwin I. Hatch nuclear power plant during a virtual public meeting scheduled for April 11. The two-unit Hatch plant is located in southeastern Georgia and operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co.
The online meeting will begin at 4 p.m., Eastern time, via Microsoft Teams. The NRC staff members responsible for inspecting the plant, including the resident inspectors based at the site, will give a short presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.
Members of the public without access to the web can listen to the meeting via telephone by calling (301) 576-2978, passcode 535403670#. Telephone participants will need to press *6 to unmute their phones to ask the NRC staff questions during that part of the meeting.
The agency determined that the Hatch plant operated safely during 2022, and all inspection findings and performance indicators had very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow, or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
NRC resident inspectors and other inspection specialists from the NRC Region II office in Atlanta perform inspections at the Hatch plant.
The annual assessment letter for the Hatch plant, including upcoming inspection plans, is available on the NRC website. Current performance information for Unit 1 and Unit 2 is available and updated quarterly.
