STAFF REQUIREMENTS - JOINT MEETING OF THE FEDERAL ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION AND THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION On January 25, 2024, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to discuss grid reliability, nuclear power plants and other topics. A representative of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) presented the long-term reliability assessment. FERC provided an overview and updates on grid reliability; briefings on the status of standards development and implementation for cold weather preparedness and applicability to nuclear plants; gas-electric coordination since Winter Storm Uri; cyber security updates; and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Audits Lessons Learned Report. The NRC staff presentations addressed the current fleet of operating reactors; updates on advanced and new reactors; grid reliability; the implementation of the Executive Order on Coordinating National Resilience to Electromagnetic Pulses; interagency agreements; subsequent license renewal; the NRCs permitting process for the National Environmental Policy Act and related laws, regulations, and processes; an update on cyber security program guidance and research activities; research activities related to emerging cyber issues; and trends observed in cyber security inspection and oversight.
The meeting, which was held at FERC Headquarters, Washington, D.C. at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, was open to members of the public attending in person and via webcast.
The Commission identified no requirements for staff action.
