By letter dated November 8, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No.: ML23312A320) Oklo Inc. (Oklo) submitted a white paper (WP),
Development of Regulatory Controls: Shutdown Case Study, for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs review. This is one of a series of WPs that are intended to reach alignment between Oklo and the NRC staff on Oklos safety classification approach. The WP demonstrates Oklos systematic process for classifying functions across the design, and transcribing those to structures, systems, and components, through the specific exemplification of a limiting event, as applied to the Aurora powerhouse. Oklo also provided specific questions that it would like the NRC staff to address in its feedback.
On June 2, 2023, Oklo also shared a draft WP titled Development of Regulatory Controls:
Shutdown Case Study (ML23219A015). On June 27-28, and July 31, 2023, the NRC staff met with Oklo to discuss the WP. The NRC staff shared preliminary feedback on the draft WP to support the meeting discussions.
The enclosure to this letter provides the NRC staffs feedback and observations on the November 8, 2023, WP for Oklo to consider as part of any future submittal that may address this topic.
