[External_Sender] Comments against re-licensing Diablo Nuclear Plant due to 3 recent proximate Earthquakes Honorable NRC Commissioners, It is of utmost importance for your current deliberations, that your immediate attention is called to the recent occurrence of three earthquakes (3), within 5 - 7 miles of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant (DCNPP) in just over one month, as reported by the US Geological Survey, local governmental sources and the media:
- 1. December 27, 2023, Richter Scale 3.2, 5 miles from DCNPP, https://www.noozhawk.com/3-2-magnitude-earthquake-near-diablo-canyon-power-plant-rattles-slo-county/
- 2. December 31, 2023, Richter Scale 2.8, 8 miles from DCNPP, https://earthquaketrack.com/quakes/2024-01-01-06-24-02-utc-2-8-5
- 3. January 12, 2024, Richter Scale 1.05, 5 miles from DCNPP, https://database.earth/earthquakes/event/nc73988406 As often stated by the NRC, earthquake safety at DCNPP is a paramount concern for their employees, local residents and visitors to the Central California Coast.
Had these recent "wake up call" earthquakes occurred before PG&E's decision to apply for re-commissioning, it is highly probable that decision-makers, within and outside of PG&E leadership, would not have chosen to move forward.
The good news in your current deliberation process, is that the earthquake faults that exist in such close proximity to DCNPP, regardless of size, clearly prove that actual seismic activity is no longer theoretical; these three earthquakes were real; the second one actually hit on the evening of New Year's Eve, with an unmistakably booming, shaking announcement of things to come !
I strongly urge each Commissioner to embrace these three "Red Flag Warnings" and vote to deny PG&E's application, in order to avoid the very real possibility of a catastrophic event to the people and places in this part of the fragile planet we all share.
Renewables are ready to fill the void from de-commissioning DCNPP.
Thank you for your consideration of these serious comments.
Truly yours, Tim Rochte, (Ret).
