SUMMARY
OF THE JANUARY 11, 2024, PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS POSSIBLE EFFICIENCIES ON THE SUBSEQUENT LICENSE RENEWAL REVIEW On January 11, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an information meeting with the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) about possible efficiencies on the Subsequent License Renewal review. This was a follow-up meeting to the October 31, 2023, public meeting (Agencywide Documents Access and Management Systems (ADAMS) Accession No. ML23317A058). The NRC staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271).

Meeting Summary:
The NRC staff began the meeting with a presentation on a tiered approach for the NRC staffs safety reviews for license renewal applications. The NRC staff discussed leveraging prior license renewal application reviews and industry operating experience. The NRC staff discussed the potential to use risk information to aid in deciding the level of review for various portions of the license renewal application. The NRC staff provided responses to NEIs discussion points from the meeting held on October 31, 2024, about the environmental review.

The NEI continued the meeting with a presentation on a graded approach for reviews of license renewal applications. The NRC staff and NEI engaged in a discussion after the presentations to further understand the information presented. The public had an opportunity to ask the NRC staff questions after the presentations and discussions. There was a question about the use of risk with the graded approach. The NRC staff stated that the use of risk would not be a primary factor in the graded approach.
The NRC staff expects the next meeting to be held in February. Until then, the NRC will continue to work on this project.
No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting.
