Attachment 1 to Holtec Letter 5021073 LAR 1040-5, Revision 0 Summary of Proposed Changes Proposed Change #1 Introduce 2 new versions of the HI-STORM UMAX (Version B1 and B2)
Reason for Proposed Change #1 The reason for the change is to enhance the safety of the system by minimizing exposure of the canisters to air with salt particles. Version B1 has lid features that block off a portion of the inlet vent while Version B2 has lid features which allow for the vent to be fully closed off. Fully Closed off vents provide more protection for the canisters against air with salt particles.
Justification for Proposed Change #1 The two versions introduced by the change require revised heat loads because of the different inlet air sizes. The normal conditions thermal analysis was re-performed with the revised vent size and new heat loads, and the Peak Cladding Temperatures for design variants Version B1 and B2 are bounded by the UMAX standard design as reported in Table 4.1.3. Therefore, the Standard UMAX is adopted to perform remaining licensing basis calculations to establish safety for the HI-STORM UMAX system.
