SUMMARY

OF SITE VISIT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY IN GAITHERSBURG, MARYLAND On November 14, 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff visited the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The visit was conducted to support the staffs review of NISTs, August 8, 2023, license renewal application.

Purpose:

The visit to NISTs facilities was conducted to support the NRC staffs review of NISTs license renewal application (LRA) dated August 8, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML23220A398).

Summary of Activities:

Following arrival at the facility and introductions of the visit participants, NIST staff made a presentation discussing general information about the facilities, the NRC-regulated activities, and other relevant information, such as a brief description of renovations to Building 245 which houses the majority of operations involving use of licensed materials (i.e., the H-Wing), and other information relevant to their operations.

Following this presentation, NIST staff took the NRC staff for a tour around their facilities. During the tour, the NRC staff had the opportunity to visit the irradiator facilities, waste and radioactive materials storage rooms, radiochemistry laboratories, and accelerator facilities. Following this tour, an exit meeting was conducted. No regulatory decisions or LRA-related discussions were conducted. The site visit was adjourned at around noon.

There are no follow-up actions as a result of this visit.
