Purpose:

To inform the States that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued its fiscal year 2023 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for University Nuclear Leadership Program, Scholarship and Fellowship Education, Distinguished Faculty Advancement, and Trade School Community College Scholarship Grants.

Background:

The program provides funding to support education for nuclear science, engineering, technology, health physics and nuclear-related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. The program provides funding for students and early career (untenured) faculty. The estimated total budget for the funding opportunity is

$10,000,000 with an award ceiling of $600,000.

New this year, the grant includes proposals for projects supporting innovative community engagement strategies such as environmental justice.

Discussion: These grants can increase enthusiasm and involvement in nuclear science, engineering, health physics and nuclear-related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting facilities and safe handling of nuclear materials.

States are encouraged to share this opportunity with their contacts at universities, trade schools, and community colleges. States can work with our program manager to get access to the Principal Investigators who have students committed to the industry.

Grant applications are due on September 8, 2023. Information on the grant program can be found here: https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=349469 .
