UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555 -0001
June 20, 2023 CHAIR
The Honorable Gene L. Dodaro Comptroller General U.S. Government Accountability Office 441 G Street, NW Washington, DC 20548
Dear Comptroller General Dodaro :
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your May 10, 2023, letter providing an update on the overall status of the NRC's implementation of the U.S. Government Accountabil ity Office (GAO) recommendations and calling to my attention those open recommendations that GAO believes the NRC should give high priority. Those recommendations are related to the following: (1) the security of radiological sources, (2) the reliability of cost estimates, and (3) the cybersecurity of the nation. The Commission acknowledges GAO's concerns regarding the open recommendations and appreciates GAO recognizing in its 2022 report that the NRC had implemented 10 recommendations made in 5 reports from fiscal year 2018.
The NRC appreciates the efforts of GAO to identify opportunities to improve agency operations. We take each GAO recommendation seriously. Please find in the enclosure an update on the actions that the NRC is taking to address GAO's open priority recommendations.
If you need additional information, please contact me or John Jolicoeur, Executive Technical Assistant, Office of the Executive Director for Operations, at (301) 415-1642.
Sincerely,
Christopher T. Hanson
