STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON 10 C.F.R. PART 53 LICENSING AND REGULATION OF ADVANCED NUCLEAR REACTORS On May 16, 2023, the Commission was briefed by the NRC staff and an external panel on the development of 10 C.F.R. Part 53. The external panel included Dr. Kathryn Huff, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, Department of Energy; Doug True, Chief Nuclear Officer and Senior Vice President, Technical & Regulatory Services, Nuclear Energy Institute; Nicholas McMurray, Managing Director for Public Policy, ClearPath; Travis A. Chapman, Director, Reactor Licensing & Regulatory Affairs, X-energy; Steve Schilthelm, Director of Regulatory and Mission Assurance, BWXT Advanced Technologies; and Dr. Edwin Lyman, Director of Nuclear Power Safety, Union of Concerned Scientists.
The meeting, which was held in the Commissioners Hearing Room, One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, was open to members of the public attending in person and via webcast.
The Commission identified no requirements for staff action.
