NRC STAFFS REVIEW OF LATEST EDITIONS OF ASME CODE SECTION III, DIVISION 5, SECTION XI, DIVISION 2, AND RELATED CODE CASES
Dear Mr. Keating and Mr. Swayne:
I would like to inform you of the NRCs staff plans for implementing a periodic review process to consider the need for endorsing the latest editions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)Section III, Division 5 (III-5), High Temperature Reactors,Section XI, Division 2 (XI-2), Requirements for Reliability and Integrity Management (RIM) Programs for Nuclear Power Plants, and related Sections III-5 and XI-2 Code Cases.
The staff endorsed the 2017 Edition of Section III-5 and related Code Cases in Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.87, Revision 2, Acceptability of ASME Code Section III, Division 5, High Temperature Reactors, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS]
ML22101A263), and the 2019 Edition of Section XI-2 in RG 1.246, Acceptability of ASME Code,Section XI, Division 2, Requirements for Reliability and Integrity Management (RIM)
Programs for Nuclear Power Plants, for Non-Light Water Reactors, (ADAMS Accession No. ML22061A244).
The staff plans to assess the need to revise RGs 1.87 and 1.246 to incorporate new Code editions and/or Code Cases coincident with the publication of the 2023 Edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and every two years thereafter. The staff will communicate the result of its evaluation using periodic review forms posted to the NRC's external website under Regulatory Guides. If justified, the update to RG 1.87 and RG 1.246 would continue to include the endorsement of the latest Code editions and related Code Cases.
The NRC appreciates the open dialogue and welcomes future correspondence as the NRC continues to support the development, revision, and use of ASME Sections III-5, XI-2, and related Code Cases and their respective endorsement in RGs 1.87 and 1.246.
