SUMMARY
OF DROP-IN BY GLOBAL LASER ENRICHMENT TO DISCUSS THEIR STATUS AND PLANS FOR FUTURE LICENSING ACTIONS, HELD FEBRUARY 21, 2023 Representatives from Global Laser Enrichment LLC. (GLE) held a drop-in with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on February 21, 2023.
The drop-in consisted of a meeting with the NRC and DOE staff from 2:00-3:00pm and management from 3:00-3:30pm. GLE presented their status of operations, near term plans for expansion, and long-term plans to submit a license application for a Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility (PLEF) in Paducah, Kentucky.
GLE stated they are currently expanding operations to complete implementation of Technology Readiness Level 6 (i.e., engineering or pilot-scale, similar (prototypical) system validation in relevant environment) at the test loop. Later in 2023, they plan to move their offices and machine shop off the General Electric Hitachi (GEH) site to a nearby location. They are planning to use the previously terminated GEH laser enrichment license as a starting point for developing their new application for the PLEF enrichment facility. Many of the programs, process, and the integrated safety analysis will be the same. The application will require an environmental impact statement for the new proposed location. GLE discussed their timeline for submitting the application for the PLEF facility. They also envision participating in the developing HALEU fuel, provided they can get appropriate funding. GLE submitted a security related and proprietary slide presentation that provides their timeline and options for moving to commercial operations.
