[External_Sender] New Oak Ridge Fuel Processing Facility To Whom It May Concern:

I found the articles appearing in recent Knoxville News Sentinel, discussing the new SMR fuel processing center in Oak Ridge, TN, to be confusing and misleading. Don't get me wrong, I am very much in favor of nuclear energy plants and SMR deployments, but I think the public deserves clear and valid information.

Here are my questions and concerns:

1. The articles imply that uranium dioxide is a 'new' kind of reactor fuel. To my knowledge, this is NOT TRUE. All commercial reactor fuel consists of UO2 with approximately 5% fissionable U-235. Uranium hexafluoride is just a precursor, that is enriched and oxidized to produce fuel rods. So what is 'new' about the TRISOX process?
2. The articles do not at all describe where the fissionable material will come from, or how it will be shipped to the new fuel processing facility. I am just guessing that it will involve downblending highly enriched, weapons grade uranium, that I'm guessing will be supplied from the Y-12 stockpile. Please explain.
3. The article implies that uranium is nontoxic and harmless until exposed to the reactor environment.

To my knowledge that is also NOT TRUE.
