The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with the NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271). The main points of discussion during the meeting included:
On November10, 2022, the NRC staff held a partially closed meeting with TerraPower, to provide an overview of the Principal Design Criteria on the Natrium Design.
Participants included representatives from TerraPower, General Electric Hitachi, and Bechtel.
The NRC staff began the meeting with introductions and explained that a portion of the meeting would be closed to the public to discuss proprietary information. During the public portion of the meeting, TerraPower representatives discussed the use of Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.232 to gain insight into the NRC staffs views on how the General Design Criteria contained in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 50, Domestic Licensing of Production and Utilization Facilities, Appendix A could be interpreted to address non-LWR design features. TerraPower also discussed how RG 1.232 Appendix B, SFR-DC was used as a starting point for the development of the Natrium Principal Design Criteria.
During the closed portion of the meeting, TerraPower representatives presented in more detail the Principal Design Criteria Criterion 26Reactivity control system redundancy and capability on the Natrium Design. TerraPower representatives and the NRC staff discussed the next steps for future interactions regarding the Natrium Reactor design.
