Dear NRC:
I urge you to reject the application by Vistra to extend the operating licenses for the Comanche Peak nuclear power reactors for an additional 20 years. To protect public health, safety, security, and financial health, the reactors should retire as licensed, on or before 2030 and 2033.
I request that in-person scoping meetings be held in Texas, as originally planned, when Covid risks subside. I request that a hearing opportunity be allowed for those seeking to intervene and that the deadline for requesting a hearing be postponed for 90 days past the current January 30 deadline. It is extremely important for the following issues to be addressed:
- The reactors must not operate 20 years past their original retirement dates of 2030 and 2033 because they would generate more deadly radioactive waste and there is no permanent disposal site. As it is the Texas Governor and Legislators are fighting plans to store the nations high-level radioactive waste in TX.
No one wants it in their "backyard". Therefore, NRC should not allow even more radioactive waste to be created.
- The aging nuclear reactors will become more dangerous over time due to metal fatigue, embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking, Chances of an accident or radiation release increase and they are very expensive to repair.
1/28/23, 7:18 AM blob:https://www.fdms.gov/84be8338-0562-4bb2-8f08-5b77b8728068 used to cool the nuclear reactors is contained by a 4,700 foot long earthen dam. The water contains radioactive tritium. What if the earthen dam gets damaged by earthquakes? Would there be enough cooling water for the reactors? Would radioactive tritium be released and spread?
- Nuclear power is not needed. We have and can produce more renewable wind and solar energy that could easily and affordably replace extended nuclear generation, without creating more deadly radioactive waste. Texas has plenty of wind and sunshine to tap, and energy storage can help maximize these resources.
Please extend the deadline for intervention and host in-person meetings and hearings at a convenient time for the participants during the day or evening.
Thank you.
