[External_Sender] NFS Weapons Grade Nuclear Fuel Date:
Thursday, January 26, 2023 4:17:13 PM Honorable ASLB Panel Chair and NRC Rulemaking and Adjudications Staff:
I am submitting a limited appearance statement in order to make the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board aware of my concerns at issue in this proceeding.
There are many reasons why the proposed project should be discussed at a public hearing, The location of NFS is in a heavily populated area near schools and homes.
It is illogical to be giving this job to an unsecure private company whose sole goal is profit.
They already have a horrendous, careless record of releasing environmental pollution including contamination with radioactive material into the Nolichucky river as far downstream as at least 95 miles.
The risk of airborne radiation exposure is great and the winds will carry this dangerous pollution to nearby neighborhoods The increase of weapon grade fuel is a huge difference from what they have been capable of doing.
Who is monitoring this process? Where is the oversight?
The danger that this process poses to many areas/neighborhoods is significant and subject to the radical behavior of domestic terrorists as evidenced by the drive-by shooting of 2 Duke energy substations in Moore county NC in Dec '22 creating a massive power outage to 45,000 homes. Such an event pales by comparison if a nuclear catastrophe were to happen. What protections does NFS have in place to prevent such a disaster?
Where are the plans for an EIS to be done prior to this potential endeavor? The Nolichucky river has already been threatened with their basic and present production.
Erwin's water supply comes from springs one as close as a mile from NFS and the towns of Jonesborough and Greenville also depend on drinking water from the Nolichucky river.
It is extremely suspicious that they are trying to push this plan through without public input.
These are serious concerns of the community and I sincerely hope that you will consider them and refuse to bestow this permit on NFS. They have already done enough damage to this area.
