STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON OVERVIEW OF ADVANCED REACTOR FUEL ACTIVITIES On December 8, 2022, the Commission was briefed by an external panel and a staff panel on the status of, and issues associated with, the path to licensing advanced reactor fuels. The external panel included Andrew Griffith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Supply Chain, Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy; Sander van Til, Lead Scientist, Nuclear Fuel Research & Innovation, Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group; Jennifer Wheeler, Director of Regulatory Affairs, TRISO-X; Dr. Christina Back, Vice President, Nuclear Technologies and Materials, General Atomics; James Vollmer, Senior Manager, Fuel Development and Qualification, TerraPower; Dr. Rusty Towell, Director, NEXT Lab, Abilene Christian University; and Dr. Edwin Lyman, Director of Nuclear Power Safety, Union of Concerned Scientists.
The meeting, which was held in the Commissioners Hearing Room, One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, was open to members of the public attending in person and via webcast.
The Commission identified no requirements for staff action.
