STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON REGULATORY APPROACHES FOR FUSION ENERGY DEVICES (PUBLIC MEETING)
On November 8, 2022, the Commission was briefed by the NRC staff and an external panel on the development of regulatory approaches for fusion energy devices and industry progress in commercializing fusion energy devices. The external panel participants included Dr. Kathryn McCarthy, U.S. ITER Project Director, Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Dr. Richard Hawryluk, Senior Technical Advisor, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy; Edward Lewis-Smith, Head of Domestic Fusion Policy and Programmes, United Kingdom Government Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Megan Shober, Nuclear Safety Specialist, Wisconsin Division of Public Health; Sachin Desai, General Counsel, Helion Energy; Dr. Bob Mumgaard, Chief Executive Officer, Commonwealth Fusion Systems; and Dr. Seth Hoedl, President of the Post Road Foundation.
The meeting, which was held in the Commissioners Hearing Room, One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, was open to members of the public attending in person and via webcast.
There were no requirements identified for staff action.
