UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Yellow Announcement: YA-22-0085 Date: October 13, 2022 TO:

All NRC Employees

SUBJECT:

A MESSAGE FROM CHAIR HANSON ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND ACCESSIBILITY I have been privileged in my time at the NRC to support ongoing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts, championed by the Office of Small Business and Civil Rights (SBCR), our special emphasis groups, and employees across the agency. To cite just one such effort, I am very proud of our employees for starting a grassroots campaign to embrace the power of diversity through the use of inclusive language across the NRC. I thank our staff who are serving as Inclusive Language Ambassadors and SBCR for championing education and change that will have a lasting impact.

It is incumbent on us to model inclusive behavior starting at the top. You may have heard others refer to me as Chair Hanson. This is a deliberate choice to use inclusive language. This change is part of a series of commitments that I recently made when, in my personal capacity as NRC Chair, I joined a leadership network called Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy. To hold myself accountable to actions that will further DEIA efforts at the NRC, I signed a panel parity pledge in which I commit, whenever possible, to avoid appearing on single-gender panels.

Ive also committed to:

1) Champion the use of inclusive language in the NRCs written work products and correspondence, including gender-neutral personal pronouns.
2) Support the NRCs outreach and recruitment activities and, particularly, those activities that are focused on increasing diversity in the candidate pool for new hires.
3) Champion the activities of the NRCs special emphasis groups.

Thank you again to the inspiring staff that recognize the need for the NRC to prioritize efforts that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. I continue to learn from you, and I encourage others to do the same. If you would like more information about the use of inclusive language, go to https://nuclepedia.usalearning.gov/index.php/Inclusive_language.
