SUMMARY

OF JUNE 30, 2022, PERIODIC ADVANCED REACTOR STAKEHOLDER PUBLIC MEETING On June 30, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an information meeting with a question-and-answer session with stakeholders to discuss advanced reactor topics including:

Expanding and Internationalizing the EPRI Advanced Reactor Owner-Operator Requirements Guide Part 53 - Industry/Stakeholder Perspectives on Framework B, Framework A, and NRC Stakeholder Engagement Process Regulatory Priorities for New and Advanced Reactors Part 53 Subpart F Staffing Requirements U.S.-NRC-CNSC Memorandum of Cooperation: Joint Report, TRISO Fuel Qualification Assessment CONTACT: Shelley Pitter NRR/DANU 301-415- 3454

For each topic listed above, the NRC staff provided information and allotted time for stakeholder comments and questions. Stakeholders provided feedback on several of the topics and asked clarifying questions. NRC staff appreciated the feedback and provided response to the questions.

The NRC staff provided updates of the Advanced Reactor Integrated Schedule of Activities on the NRCs public website at https://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/advanced/integrated-review-schedule.html. The NRC staff noted that the schedule reflects activities that have recently been completed, updated, or added since the May 11, 2022, advanced reactor stakeholder meeting.

Industry participation included EPRI, NEI (Nuclear Energy Institute), USNIC (US Nuclear Industry Council), the Breakthrough Institute and ANS (American Nuclear Society). EPRI provided an introduction and overview of current status of EPRI Owner-Operator Requirements Guidance and that a unique opportunity exists for international coordination and harmonization of end-user requirements for new (advanced) reactors.

NEI and USNIC provided initial comments regarding their review of Part 53 Framework B, and provided additional thoughts on Part 53 Framework A. The Breakthrough Institute provided thoughts on the NRC stakeholder engagement process and provided high-level comments on a risk-informed and performance-based regulatory framework, including Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) in framework A. ANS provided comments on Part 53 Framework A, highlighting some specific concerns related to the fire protection requirements.

The NRC staff presented on its progress to develop a joint report regarding tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) Fuel Qualification Assessment under the NRC-Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Memorandum of Cooperation. The staff discussed the various phases in the project and its current schedule to produce the final report in 2023.

Members of the public were in attendance and the NRC did not receive public meeting feedback forms.
