Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

FY 2022 ANNUAL REQUEST FOR RISK-INFORMED ACTIVITY INFORMATION Instructions:

The purpose of this e-mail (ticket) is to request a review and status update of your Risk-Informed Activities. This information will be used to revise the current information on the agencys public website (https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/risk-informed/rpp.html). The Risk-Informed Activity website communicates the purpose and use of PRAs in NRCs reactor regulatory program to the public and stakeholders, consistent with Staff Requirements Memorandum (SRM), BRIEFING ON STATUS OF RISK-INFORMED AND PERFORMANCE-BASED REACTOR REGULATION (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) ML061520304), dated June 1, 2006.

Last year, the Nuclear Regulator Research (RES) requested the information from each program Office Director using the ticketing process and will do the same this year.

Please consider the following when providing the update of your Risk-Informed Activities:

  • Since risk insights may be utilized in many ways, spanning all technical divisions within your office, the ticket assignment should include a wide distribution to ensure all Risk-Informed Activities are identified in the response.
  • If any risk-Informed Activity is already described on a separate program office public website please ensure the website is up-to-date. The Risk-Informed Activity Web site will simply provide that link, not duplicating information already provided to the public.

CONTACT: Dale Yeilding, RES/DRA/PRB 301-415-0898

Please ensure the use of risk is clearly descried on any separate program office Web site and provide the link to that Web site. Beyond providing the link and the annual update, no further response or action is needed for activities with separate public Web sites.

  • Please review your program office activities now on the public Web site for this years annual update by providing a Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 paragraph for existing activities, adding new Risk-Informed Activities, if applicable, and deleting any activities that the public was informed last year was complete. Ensure the information is presented in a manner for the public to have a clear understanding of the activitys risk assessment needed to validate the activity is risk-informed and differentiated from activities using traditional deterministic methods. Avoid using generic terms such as risk insights or risk approaches were used. Providing specific examples will be helpful for the public and our stakeholders to understand how we use risk to make risk-informed decisions.
  • An update is required for all activities with a section titled FY 2022. Some activities are also lacking a FY 2021 update that should be addressed. includes links to the information your office provided for Fiscal Year FY 2021 along with possible links to existing program office websites that must be verified to prevent duplicate posting to the public. The enclosure also identifies activities where the use of risk could be more clearly explained possibly by providing examples for how risk is being considered. A prior RES request memo (ML20227A386) included a risk primer and template which has been removed from this email for expediency. You may refer to this document package to assist in describing the many ways that risk can be addressed to support a risk-informed decision..

A single e-mail with all program office information should be sent to Dale Yeilding by October 21,.2022. :
