ruled out as the cause, the individual's NVLAP certified dosimeter must be sent for processing within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
. In 7

addition, the individual may not resume work associated with radiation use until a determination of the individual's 8

radiation exposure has been made. This determination must be made by the RSO or the RSO's designee. The 9

results of this determination shall be documented. The documents shall be maintained in accordance with paragraph 10 (4) of Subsection H of 20.3.5.15 NMAC.

11 E.

If a NVLAP certified dosimeter is lost or damaged, the worker shall cease work immediately until 12 a replacement dosimeter is provided and the exposure is calculated for the time period from issuance to loss or 13 damage of the dosimeter. The results of the calculated exposure and the time period for which the dosimeter was 14 lost or damaged shall be documented. The documents shall be maintained in accordance with paragraph (4) of 15 Subsection H of 20.3.5.15 NMAC.

NMAC, conduct a survey of the radiographic exposure device and the guide tube after each exposure when 8

approaching the device or the guide tube. The survey must determine that the sealed source has returned to its 9

shielded position before exchanging films, repositioning the exposure head, or dismantling equipment.

10 (2)

Conduct a survey of the radiographic exposure device with a calibrated radiation survey 11 instrument any time the source is exchanged and whenever a radiographic exposure device is placed in a storage 12 area (as defined in Subsection AO of 20.3.5.7 NMAC), to ensure that the sealed source is in its shielded position.

15 D.

Records shall be kept of the surveys required by Subsection B of 20.3.5.17 NMAC. Such records 16 shall be maintained for inspection by the Department for three years after completion of the survey. If the survey 17 was used to determine an individual's exposure, however, the records of the survey shall be maintained until the 18 Department authorizes their disposition.

requirements of this section.

10 E.

Notwithstanding Subsection A of 20.3.5.21 NMAC, equipment used in industrial radiographic 11 operations need not comply with §8.9.2(c) of the endurance test in American national standards institute N432-1980, 12 if the prototype equipment has been tested using a torque value representative of the torque that an individual using 13 the radiography equipment can realistically exert on the lever or crankshaft of the drive mechanism.

23 A.

The licensee or registrant shall perform visual and operability checks on survey meters, radiation 24 machines, radiographic exposure devices, transport and storage containers, associated equipment and source 25 changers before use on each day the equipment is to be used to ensure that the equipment is in good working 26 condition, that the sources are adequately shielded, and that required labeling is present. Survey instrument 27 operability must be performed using check sources or other appropriate means. If equipment problems are found, 28 the equipment must be removed from service until repaired.

29 B.

Each licensee or registrant shall perform, and have written procedures for, inspection and routine 30 maintenance of radiation machines, radiographic exposure devices, source changers, associated equipment, transport 31 and storage containers, and survey instruments at intervals not to exceed three months or before the first use 32 thereafter to ensure the proper functioning of components important to safety. Replacement components shall meet 33 design specifications. If equipment problems are found, the equipment must be removed from service until repaired.

34 C.

The inspection and maintenance program must include procedures to assure that Type B packages 35 are shipped and maintained in accordance with the certificate of compliance or other approval.

36 D.

If any inspection conducted pursuant to Subsections A, B, or C of 20.3.5.23 NMAC reveals 37 damage to components critical to radiation safety, the device shall be removed from service and labeled as defective 38 until repairs have been made.

39 E.

Records of equipment problems and of any maintenance performed pursuant to the requirements 40 of this section shall be made in accordance with the following:

41 (1)

Each licensee or registrant shall maintain records of equipment problems found in daily 42 checks and quarterly inspections of radiation machines, radiographic exposure devices, transport and storage 43 containers, associated equipment, source changers, and survey instruments; and retain each record for three years 44 after it is made.

45 (2)

48 49 20.3.5.24 LEAK TESTING, REPAIR, TAGGING, OPENING, MODIFICATION, AND 50 REPLACEMENT OF SEALED SOURCES:

51 A.

The replacement of any sealed source fastened to or contained in a radiographic exposure device 52 and leak testing, repair, tagging, opening, or any other modification of any sealed source shall be performed only by 53 persons specifically authorized to do so by the Department.

54

of a certificate from a transferor indicating that a test has been made within the six-month period prior to the 2

transfer, the sealed source shall not be put into use until tested.

3 C.

The leak test shall be capable of detecting the presence of 185 becquerels (0.005 microcuries) of 4

removable contamination on the sealed source. An acceptable leak test for sealed sources in the possession of a 5

radiography licensee would be to test at the nearest accessible point to the sealed source storage position, or other 6

appropriate measuring point, by a procedure to be approved pursuant to Part 3 of 20.3 NMAC. Records of leak test 7

results shall be kept in units of becquerels or microcuries and maintained for inspection by the Department for three 8

19 F.

Each exposure device using depleted uranium (DU) shielding and an "S" tube configuration must 20 be tested for DU contamination at intervals not to exceed 12 months. The analysis must be capable of detecting the 21 presence of 185 Bq (0.005 microcuries) of radioactive material on the test sample and must be performed by a 22 person specifically authorized by the Department to perform the analysis. Should such testing reveal the presence of 23 185 Bq (0.005 microcuries) or more of removable DU contamination, the exposure device must be removed from 24 use until an evaluation of the wear on the S-tube has been made. Should the evaluation reveal that the S-tube is 25 worn through, the device may not be used again. DU shielded devices do not have to be tested for DU 26 contamination while in storage and not in use. Before using or transferring such a device however, the device must 27 be tested for DU contamination if the interval of storage exceeded 12 months. Records of DU leak tests results shall 28 be kept in units of microcuries (becquerels) and maintained for inspection by the department for 3 years.
