Regulatory Affairs 3535 Colonnade Parkway Birmingham, AL 35243 205 992 5000 August 17, 2022 Docket Nos.: 50-348, 50-364 NL-22-0608 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-0001 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 Interim 10 CFR 21.21(a)(2) Report Regarding Framatome Supplied Siemens Medium Voltage Circuit Breakers On May 23, 2022, Framatome notified Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, among others, by letter of a potential nonconformance in certain Siemens medium voltage circuit breakers that could create a substantial safety hazard in certain applications. Because Framatome did not have enough information to determine where licensees intended to or had installed the supplied breakers, or how many breakers within the population supplied were actually nonconforming, a 10 CFR 21.21(b) letter was issued for certain licensees to evaluate the impact to their facility with respect to the reportability requirements of 10 CFR 21.

Southern Nuclear (SNC) has determined that additional time beyond the 60-day evaluation period is needed to perform the necessary walkdowns of the installed equipment and complete the substantial safety hazard evaluation for reportability in accordance with 10 CFR 21.

Because some of the identified population of breakers are in critical safety related buses on both units, SNC expects to complete the substantial safety hazard evaluation of this condition no later than December 15, 2023. The timeframe accounts for the time needed to inspect certain breakers which cannot performed online and has been prioritized for the next available refueling outages.

If you have any questions pertaining to this information, please contact Ryan Joyce, Fleet Licensing Manager, at (205) 992-6468.
