VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION (VCSNS) UNIT 1 SPECIAL REPORT 2022-003-01 INOPERABLE RADIATION MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION CHANNEL Dominion Energy South Carolina, Inc. (DESC) hereby submits Special Report 2022-003-01 as an update to Special Report 2022-003 which was submitted on May 6, 2022, pursuant to the requirements of Technical Specification (TS) 6.9.2, as required by Action 30 of TS 3.3.3 .1.b, Table 3.3-6, RADIATION MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION, Item 2.d.iii.

In Special Report 2022-003, VCSNS indicated that the time required to refurbish the existing detectors was pending detailed evaluation by the vendor and the station tentatively targeted restoration of RM-A14 to OPERABLE status within 90 days. Due to supplier refurbishment/replacement issues, restoration of RM-A 14 to OPERABLE status is not expected until the fourth quarter of 2022.

Purge Exhaust Effluent High Range Radiation Monitor, RM-A14, was declared inoperable on April 26, 2022, at 0643 EDT, due to erroneous indications. Upon declaring RM-A 14 inoperable, VCSNS implemented a preplanned alternate method of monitoring in accordance with the requirements of Action 30 of TS Table 3.3-6. VCSNS is working to refurbish existing detectors. Two spare detectors, which were previously repaired by the vendor, required additional repairs after attempting installation in the plant. A third spare detector is also being evaluated for repairs by the vendor. In parallel, four new detectors have been ordered from the vendor and are expected to arrive at VCSNS in the fourth quarter of 2022 for installation, if needed. As such, VCSNS is tentatively targeting restoration of RM-A14 to OPERABLE status within 90 days of this letter date. If additional time is required VCSNS will provide an update to this Special Report.

RM-A 14 provides radiation monitoring for the Reactor Building Purge Exhaust System as described within Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) section 9.4.8.2.2 Reactor Building Purge Supply and Exhaust System, FSAR Figure 9.4-28, and FSAR section 11.4 Process and Effluent Radiological Monitoring Systems.
