SUMMARY

OF THE JUNE 14, 2022, PUBLIC MEETING BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND THE NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE TO DISCUSS NRC'S COMMENTS ON NEIS WHITE PAPER ON THE REMOTE EMERGENCY RESPONSE ORGANIZATION On June 14, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted a public meeting with representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) to discuss NRCs comments on NEIs latest version of its white paper entitled Enabling a Remote Response by Members of an Emergency Response Organization. The public meeting was held virtually, and the meeting notice, meeting agenda topics, and NEIs white paper are publicly available in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). A list of the meeting participants enclosed.

The meeting provided an open and collaborative environment for NRC staff and industry to discuss comments on remote emergency response organization (ERO) augmentation. The NRC staffs comments addressed items in NEIs white paper regarding how to respond remotely to an emergency. Examples of NRC comments included the following: (1) inquiries regarding how drills and exercises will be controlled and evaluated for remote responders; (2) with respect to remote responders within the emergency planning zone, how will evacuations be handled if the remote responder must evacuate; and (3) during a remote ERO augmentation, is there additional guidance for individuals performing physical work and providing direction to operational support center, Technical Support Center, and emergency operations facility who are required to respond to the site augmentation. Revisions from prior drafts of the document, which were provided during the December 15, 2021, public meeting were also discussed.
