Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is seeking the publics views regardingthe agencys draft supplemental e nvironmental i mpact s tatementforthe SHINE Medical Technology LLC application for a license to operate a medical isotope production facility in Janesville, Wisconsin.

The NRC is interested in comments regardingthe statements draft conclusion: Environmental impacts are not great enough to prevent the agency from considering issuance of the license.

NRC staff will consider written comments on the draft supplemental EIS until Aug. 22, following the publication of a notice in the Feder al Register. Include Docket ID NRC-2022- 0135 with comments, via the regulations.govwebsite. Comments can also be submitted via email to SHINEEnvironmental@nrc.gov or via mail to the Office of Administration, Ma il Stop: TWFN A60M, ATTN: Program Management, Announcements and Editing Staff,U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555- 0001. The NRC staff will hold a webinar and teleconference regardingthe draft EIS on July 27, from 6-8 p.m. Central time. The webinar will include a presentation on the draft statements findings and a transcribed public comment session.

SHINE filed its application on July 17, 2019, seeking the license to operate the facility, currently under construction in Janesville. The facility would create molybdenum-99, which subsequently produces technetium-99m, an isotope used in over 30 different diagnostic medical imaging procedures. Information regardingthe operating license review, proprietary details removed, is available on the NRC website. In addition, a copy of the draft EIS is available for public inspection at the Hedberg Public Library, 316 South Main Street,in Janesville.
