ON PRE-APPLICATION ACTIVITIES FOR NUSCALE STANDARD DESIGN APPROVAL MEETING
SUMMARY
OF OPEN SESSION June 23, 2022 On June 23, 2022, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted an observation public teleconference meeting with NuScale Power, LLC (NuScale), to discuss:
(1) an update on probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) changes since NuScales design certification application (DCA), and (2) NuScales high-level overview of risk-informed approach to risk categorization in the standard design approval application (SDAA) using the proposed licensing topical report on risk-significance determination.
The public meeting commenced with opening remarks and an introduction of participants as well as external stakeholders.
NuScale began its presentation on PRA updates and implementation of risk significance determination (ML22167A130) by thanking and acknowledging the Department of Energy for their support and funding of the forthcoming SDAA.
NuScale stated that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the changes and updates to the PRA since the DCA that reflect the changes to the SDAA design that NuScale had discussed with the NRC staff in a public meeting on June 15, 2022 (ML22161B020 (nonproprietary), ML22161B021 (proprietary)), as well as other PRA updates and a high-level overview of its risk-informed approach to risk categorization in SDAA based on the proposed Risk Significant Determination licensing DCA topical report (ML16284A016).
NuScale highlighted that the impacts on the PRA and risk results of the design changes discussed in the presentation slides are preliminary and are based (in-part) on engineering judgement. NuScale noted that preliminary quantitative PRA evaluations had been performed, but these evaluations are based on the cumulative impact of all the design changes from the DCA design to the SDA design. NuScale stated it is currently largely focused on the full power internal events model.
At the conclusion of the open session of the meeting, there was an opportunity for the public to provide comments and ask questions. There were no comments or questions from the public.
After the public session of the meeting, the NRC staff continued discussion with NuScale during a closed meeting to discuss proprietary information related to the two topics.
