DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 2 AND 3, AND QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 WITHDRAWAL OF PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE TO USE ASME CODE CASE N-921 (EPID L-2022-LLR-0009)
Dear Mr. Rhoades:
By letter dated January 18, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML22018A106), Exelon Generation Company, LLC submitted an application in accordance with paragraph 50.55a(z)(1) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) for a proposed alternative to certain requirements of 10 CFR 50.55a, Codes and standards, at Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Units 2 and 3 (Dresden), and Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2 (Quad Cities). On February 1, 2022 (ML22032A333), Exelon Generation Company, LLC was renamed Constellation Energy Generation, LLC (the licensee).
The proposed alternative would allow the licensee to use the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-921, Alternative 12-yr [Year] Inspection Interval Duration, for the current inservice inspection (ISI) and containment ISI (CISI) intervals at Dresden and Quad Cities. This would extend the current ISI and CISI intervals at Dresden and Quad Cities by 2 years. The application states that, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(z)(1), the proposed alternative would provide an acceptable level of quality and safety.
By letter dated May 24, 2022 (ML22062B649), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff provided its conclusions regarding the acceptance of the application for review. The letter stated that the NRC staff did not intend to accept for review the portion of the application that seeks an alternative for the third 10-year CISI intervals at Dresden and Quad Cities. In addition, the letter identified the supplemental information that the licensee would need to provide in order for the staff to accept for review the portion of the application that seeks an alternative for the fifth 10-year ISI intervals at Dresden and Quad Cities.
By letter dated June 9, 2022 (ML22160A087), the licensee requested to withdraw the January 18, 2022, application from NRC staff review. The NRC staff acknowledges the licensees request to withdraw the application. The NRC staff activities associated with the review have ceased and the associated EPID L-2022-LLR-0009 has been closed.
