10 CFR 50.82 (a)(3)

  • Power reactor decommissioning will be completed within 60 years of permanent cessation of operations.
  • Completion of decommissioning beyond 60 years will be approved by the Commission only when necessary to protect public health and safety.
  • Factors that will be considered by the Commission in evaluating an alternative that provides for completion of decommissioning beyond 60 years of permanent cessation of operations include:

- Unavailability of waste disposal capacity

- and other site-specific factors affecting the licensee's capability to carry out decommissioning, including presence of other nuclear facilities at the site.

San Onofre Unit 1

  • Ceased Operations in 1992
  • Safely decommissioned with Unit 2 and 3 in operations
  • 60 years - 2052
  • License termination expected by 2028 with the license terminations of Unit 2 and 3

SRM-21-0133 Denial Request for an Exemption from the Decommissioning Schedule Requirements for Shutdown Reactors at the GE Hitachi Vallecitos Nuclear Center Commission Bases for Denial to exceed 60 years:

  • Not in the Interest of Public Safety to delay decommissioning

Vallecitos BWR - 2025 ESVER - 2030 GETR - 2030

Fermi - Unit 1 Completion by 2032

  • South of Unit 2 outside of the Unit 2 Security Area
  • Greater than 95%

of the radioactivity and components removed

Peach Bottom 1, 2, 3

Peach Bottom Unit 1 -

2034

  • Most of Unit 1 has been repurposed as the Training Classrooms and Emergency Operations Center and Technical Support Center for Peach Bottom Unit 2 and 3.
  • From the site picture, it appears that the remaining reactor components can be removed by 2034, and the license terminated for unrestricted use.

Dresden Unit 1 -

2036 From the pictures, it appears that by 2036, Dresden 1 the reactor components can be safely removed, and the Unit 1 footprint incorporated into the Unit 2 and 3 licenses.

Shared systems can continue to be used under the other licenses.
