THORNBURG STREET SANTA MARIA, CA 93458 (805) 730-1710 CARBAJAL.HOUSE.GOV April 29, 2022 The Honorable Christopher T. Hanson Chairman US Nuclear Regulatory Commission 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852

Dear Chairman Hanson,

I am writing to respectfully request an appropriate extension to the comment period on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions proposed decommissioning rule set to close on May 17, 2022.

As you know, Diablo Canyon Power Plant is scheduled to close Unit 1 and Unit 2 in 2024/25 respectively. While it is my understanding that the licensee, PG&E, is proceeding under current NRC processes for decommissioning, I believe that relevant sections of the proposed rulemaking need further examination and consideration for comment.

Because the commenting deadline is approaching, and my constituents have requested 180-day extension to the comment period, it would be prudent for a reasonable extension to the comment period so the public can fully provide valuable feedback to the NRC.

The scope and impact of these proposed rules will govern decommissioning of nuclear reactors across the United States for decades. The importance of establishing a practical and extensive decommissioning process for future closures requires that the public is assured that it was heard in creating these new rules.

Thank you for considering my request. If you have any questions, please contact my office.

Sincerely, SALUD CARBAJAL Member of Congress fs>alub e. ((arbajal 24tfJ ID1stmt, QCaliforma
