SUBJECT:
NRC RESPONSE TO NUSCALES LETTER DATED APRIL 15, 2022, REGARDING NUSCALE NPM-20 250 MWt STANDARD DESIGN APPROVAL PRE-APPLICATION ACTIVITY
Dear Ms. Fosaaen:
By letter dated April 15, 2022, NuScale Power, LLC, (NuScale) submitted an update to their pre-application activities that summarized past and planned NRC engagements in support of NuScales upcoming Standard Design Approval Application (SDAA) submittal currently planned for December 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML22105A395). The NRC appreciates receiving these timely updates because they allow the NRC staff to effectively plan its workload and use of resources.
In your letter, you indicated that the majority of the remaining pre-application TRs would be submitted in the fall of calendar year 2022. The NRC staff would like to note that several of these topical reports include substantive and complex information that is necessary for the SDAA review, and that these TRs may require more than a year to complete. As a result, the staff will require that each of these TRs be accepted for review before the SDAA will formally be accepted for review.
Consistent with staff practice, the review schedule and estimated staff hours for these TRs will be established at the time of acceptance. If, during the technical review of any of the TRs, it is determined that their review schedules need to be extended, an evaluation on the impact to the SDAA schedule will also be conducted. Thus, the timely completion of the technical reviews for each of the TRs will be essential in maintaining the review schedule for the SDAA.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Mr. Getachew Tesfaye, Senior Project Manager, at (301) 415-8013 or Getachew.Tesfaye@nrc.gov.
