Revised Schedule for Electric Power Research Institute Topical Report BWRVIP-315: BWR Vessel and Internals Project, Reactor Internals Aging Management Evaluation for Extended Operations (EPID No.: L-2019-TOP-0029)
Date:
Friday, May 26, 2023 12:41:20 PM Mr. Tim Hanley, Constellation, BWRVIP Chairman Nathan Palm, EPRI, BWRVIP Program Manager
Electric Power Research Institute 1300 West W.T. Harris Boulevard Charlotte, NC 28262
Dear Mr. Hanley and Mr. Palm,
By letter dated October 22, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML19297G276), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) submitted for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review the Topical Report (TR)
BWRVIP-315-NP: BWR Vessel and Internals Project Reactor Internals Aging Management Evaluation for Extended Operations." BWRVIP-315 provides a technical basis demonstrating the adequacy of the BWRVIP reactor internals aging management guidance to adequately manage age-related degradation of BWR reactor internals for operation beyond 60 years.
On February 24, 2020, the NRC staff notified the EPRI that its request had been accepted for review, and the NRC staff estimated it would issue a draft safety evaluation by April 28, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No.ML19296A008). This draft SE with open items was subsequently issued on September 1, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No.ML21105A036). On September 28, 2021, the staff held a closed meeting with you to discuss the initial draft SE and on January 20, 2022, EPRI submitted supplemental information to support the staffs development of a final SE (ADAMS Accession No.ML22025A119). On May 26, 2023, the staff issued the revised draft SE for EPRIs proprietary review (ADAMS Accession No.ML22138A043).
The purpose of this email is to officially inform EPRI of a rebaselined schedule for completion of the staffs review of BWRVIP-315. The original schedule did not include the need for requests for additional information (RAIs) or the timeframe to receive and address comments on a draft safety evaluation with open items.
As a result, the NRC staff now issued the draft safety evaluation with no open items for proprietary review on May26, 2023. Assuming the proprietary review is completed by August24,2023, the staff expects to issue the final safety evaluation by the beginning of December 2023. This schedule assumes that the final safety evaluation is not determined to be a rule in accordance with the Congressional Review Act.
This review is being conducted under a fee waiver (ADAMS Accession No. ML19304A119).
