OF DECEMBER 2, 2021, PUBLIC MEETING ON PROPOSED AGING MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Dear Mr. Coffey:
By letter dated November 16, 2020, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Package Accession No. ML20329A292), NextEra Energy Point Beach, LLC (NextEra) submitted an application for subsequent renewal of Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. DPR-24 and DPR-27 for Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2 (Point Beach),
respectively, to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
On December 2, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC, or the staff) held a public meeting with NextEra to discuss the contents of the Point Beach Subsequent License Renewal Application. The staff began with the public meeting logistics including the agenda.
The staff and applicant then discussed the applicants revised response (Revision 1) dated November 23, 2021, (ADAMS Accession No. ML21327A077) to the staffs Request for Additional Information (RAI) Safety - Set 11, dated September 29, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No. ML21287A086), and the applicants proposed response to RAI Safety - Set 12, dated November 16, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No. ML21341A605), both regarding the fire protection aging management program.
The discussion involved aspects of the applicants proposed aging management program and corresponding inspection criteria for penetration seals and fire damper closure assemblies. The NRC staff sought clarity on the applicants approach to identification of degradation and the basis for expansion of the sample size when degradation was observed, as proposed by the applicant in the revised response to RAI Safety - Set 11. In response to the staffs questions, the applicant indicated that it would modify the criteria for the identification of degradation and clarify the inspection and testing sample expansion to align with NRC staff guidance, which was subsequently provided in the applicants response to RAI Safety - Set 12, dated December 9, 2021 (ML21343A294).
