Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2021

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2021. This month we captured ten Caretta caretta and four Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation (non-causal) and there were no mortalities during the month of October. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and stranding forms were filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

One sea turtle was sent to rehab for non-causal injuries this month. On October 10th, a juvenile green turtle was proactively captured that had a fisheries related injury. There was monofilament line wrapped around its right front flipper and neck. There were also deep wounds in the base of the flipper from the monofilament. Transported to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Boca Raton by GLNC staff.

After consultation with FWC, biologists transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehab. Because this turtles injuries were unrelated to the power plant, this was classified as a non-causal stranding.

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered moderate amounts of algae and jellyfish this past month. On October 21st, several holes were observed in the 5-inch barrier net during a snorkel survey of the intake canal. These holes were not present during the barrier net inspections the previous month. In response, Underwater Engineering Services divers inspected and cleaned the barrier net on the following day. Four holes (three single strand and one larger 10-inch by 15-inch hole) were repaired. Additionally, Inwater Research Group biologists increased monitoring efforts beyond the 5-inch barrier net. Even still, no turtles were observed beyond the primary barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2021. In addition, this

spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
