OFFICE OF THE MAYOR VILLAGE OF BUCHANAN 236 Tate Avenue Buchanan, NY 10511-1298, theresak@villageofbuchanan.com 914-737-1033 Fax 914-737-6587 Comments on NRC Public Meeting on the Holtec PSDAR The Village of Buchanan is the Host Community of the Indian Point Energy Center. As we go through the decommissioning process, it is very important to us that the decommissioning is done safely. Also important is the remediation of the property of any ground water contamination, radiological or any other contamination so that eventually the property can be repurposed.
We are a small community of 1.3 square miles and Indian Point is 240 acres of that. We have an elementary school in close proximity to where the decommissioning will be occurring and we also have many residents that live even closer just outside the original Con Edison Entrance on Bleakley Avenue. It is important that radiological testing continue and air quality is addressed during the demolition. There have been concerns about the gas pipelines that need to be addressed. It is important that the community feels safe and is protected during this long process of decommissioning.
I understand that the NRC will send an inspector on site when there are significant activities occurring but I think going forward to calm fears that people have about the process we should have an Inspector on site each day.
I am the Chairwoman of the Indian Point Citizen's Advisory Panel. On January 15, 2020, Holtec did a presentation on their PSDAR to the panel. It was the first opportunity for the Panel and Community to review the report. I am pleased to have been appointed to the NY State Oversight Board for the Indian Point Decommissioning. Going forward I will be involved with the oversight and be able to voice my opinions and concerns for the community.
I would like to thank the NRC for holding the Public Meeting in our area to receive comments and listen to the concerns of the community. I look forward to the NRC holding more Public Meetings in the future Once again, it's all about the Safe Decommissioning of the Indian Point Property and the restoration of the site.
Thank you, Theresa Knickerbocker Village of Buchanan Mayor
