On November 8, 2018 the staff sent SECY-18-0113 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MODIFYING THE REACTOR OVERSIGHT PROCESS ENGINEERING INSPECTIONS Comprehensive Engineering Team Inspection (CETI) 2 (to 4) Focused Engineering Inspections (FEI) 4-yr Inspection cycle (with options for 3 or 5-yr cycle)
Licensee Self Assessment Project Demonstration - efforts cancelled On August 5, 2021 the Commission approved staff withdrawal of SECY 18-0113 2
Combined Engineering Team Inspections (CETI)
- Slight reduction in staff resources due to overlap in inspection activities.
- Benefit of enhanced review of modifications made under 50.59 (i.e. digital modifications)
- Rename DBAI (programs), triennial Fire Protection and new engineering inspections as Focused Engineering Inspection (FEI)
- Selection of replacement for POV inspection (3-year cycle ends December 2022)
- Staff intends to notify the Commission Near term considerations.
- Proposed four-year Engineering Inspection Cycle
- Staff will determine whether the four-year engineering inspection cycle continues to be supported with relevant data.
- Staff will consider new information or fact of life changes.
- 4-yr inspection cycle recommendation came from internal NRC working group in 2017-2018
- Staff will submit to the Commission a new SECY paper with options regarding the Engineering Inspection Cycle.
